I personally feel that American industrialists such as Carnegie and Rockefellar were robber barons. While they may have brought industry to the United States, they did so in a controversial manner. For instance, Rockefellar "made ruthless use of railroad-rate discrimination, espionage, bogus companies, and other reprehensible practices" (from the National Experience, p471). Despite all the good things that he brought to the nation, I do not believe they outweigh the negatives. The systems that he used would have eventually been used in the United States, as other smaller companies were developing at the same time as Rockefellar and Carnegie, and would have developed similar systems in due time.

Tally as of 10:22pm on 2/6

Robber Baron 2
Captain of Indunstry: 3

Tani - Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand interests me. Although it wouldn't be my first choice for outside reading, I am willing to take a look. I enjoyed bits and pieces of Caleb Carr's writing because it had historical themes. It sounds like Ms. Rand's book fits the bill. Thanks for the heads up.

I feel that American industrialists such as Carnegie and Rockefellar were Captians of Industry. They did pull in prophit ofcourse, however they also helped propel the U.S. into the forfrount of the Industrial movement in the global community. These industrialists also gave millions back to the communities in the form of librarys and museems.

I feel that American industrialists like Carnegie and Rockefeller were Captains of Industry. They increased the industry of steel and oil in the United States vastly. They brought much wealth and prosperity back to the United States. They also created many Opportunities for more people of the lower class. I don’t believe you can call them robber barons when they not only created one of the biggest industrial powers in the world but they also helped our economy go way up. I’m sure if you were to ask anyone from the lower class during this time what they thought of Carnegie and Rockefeller they would say they were grateful that they created new employment, and even though it was hard work it helped put food on the table that might not of been there if the job wasn’t offered. All though the work was pretty rough at times it was a stable job and for many people it was the only stable job they had ever had.

Yes i know this is Way Way Way past the deadline but i think this the only blog i've ever missed. soooo......

I think they were captains of industry yes there were some horrible conditions at the job places and sometimes they were ruthless with their tactics but they helped groom america for good things. They led to acts being passed to regulate business. The owners like carneghie, and rockefeller also made many charitable donations. They helped america grow into a better country with a few bad side bars

Carnegie and Rockefellar in my opinion should be considered captains of industry. Both gentleman worked hard, and jumped at opportunities when they presented themselves. I do believe what they did when they where the heads of their perspective companies where wrong but at that point in history people where more worried about themselves and only their selves. It was a time of dog eat dog competition they did what they had to so to succeed so hats of to the wealth business men!
