Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, 1911

Read and React: Provide your reactions to the article I presented in class about the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. Considering the Progressives were interested in making and American industry more humane by curbing the effects of industrial capitalism and checking the power of monopolies, what were some of the reactions of prominent reformers to this horrible event.

There could be an arguement for and against the factory owners.

For: The women that worked there knew the conditions and knew what they were getting themselves into. No one was forced to work there, therefore in a sense, it is not the factory owner's fault. The women knew that the doors would be locked and they worked there anyways, they were taking the risk and they payed for it.

Against: The conditions in the factory did seem to be inhumane and unreasonable. If the government is going to interfere in the business world, then where better to have intervened??? Although i believe that it was the factory owner's perogative to lock the doors, at the same time, it was and is illegal to imprison someone against their will (unless ur the govt) and in a sense, that is exactly what they were doing.
